Magnetic Memories: A Journey of Faith and Adventure

Let’s be honest: most refrigerators are a little boring. A place for leftovers, a graveyard for forgotten veggies, maybe a scribbled grocery list if you’re organized (we’re not). But ours? Ours is a time machine, a scrapbook, and—depending on how many magnets you let fall on your foot—a medieval torture device.

Open our fridge, and you won’t just find last night’s casserole. On the outside, you will find Yellowstone, Alaska, Hawaii, and more tiny, colorful reminders of everywhere we’ve been. Each magnet is a story, a memory, and a testament to God’s faithfulness in our lives—two lives that, not so long ago, looked pretty different.

See, Susan and I are both in our second marriages. We each came with our own baggage, and, yes, a few magnets from places we visited before we met. Looking closely, you’ll spot my “World’s Largest Sinner” magnet next to Susan’s “I Survived raising my son as a single mother.” Each one comes with a story—some funny, some bittersweet, all worth telling.

But here’s the miracle: God didn’t just bring our magnets together. He brought us together. We became one in marriage, and more than that, we’ve become ministry partners. There’s no magnet for that, but if there was one from our church,  we would stick it right between the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.

Our latest adventure took us to the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. If you haven’t seen a life-sized Noah’s Ark, let me tell you, it’s a boatload of fun. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) While Susan walked through the exhibits, I rode my trusty scooter—disability or not, I wouldn’t miss a single cubit. We dodged crowds like Moses parting the Red Sea, and came away with another magnet. Two days later, we headed to the Creation Museum. I stand in awe to think how God just spoke and the universe came into existence.

Through all these trips—literal and figurative—one thing keeps coming back to me: loving God is easy, but living like you love Him is an adventure. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Even when life feels like a road trip without GPS, God’s been mapping our journey.

Our fridge is proof of that. Every magnet is a reminder that God’s grace covers every mile—every wrong turn, every scenic overlook, every roadside attraction. He doesn’t waste a single stop. And just like those magnets, our stories—yours, mine, Susan’s—are meant to be shared.

So if you ever find yourself in our kitchen, don’t just look for the milk. Please take a minute to read our fridge. Ask about the time we got lost in Yellowstone, or how I scootered through the Ark like a man on a mission. If you don’t know Jesus, let’s talk—because the best journey of all is the one that leads you home to Him.

You see, there is an ultimate destination, and it doesn’t come with a magnet.  It is called heaven.

And don’t worry, I promise not to send you home with leftovers.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” —Psalm 34:8

We love you all

Randy and Susan
